Trump presents a singular and unprecedented conundrum for political satirists and comedians. Ironically, it was Fallon's other guest on Thursday night, Norm Macdonald — who parodied Trump's Dr. Oz appearance — who first and best articulated it, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter from September 2015, back when Trump was still fending off 16 other candidates for the nomination.

"They say humor is the ray of light that illuminates the evil or whatever," MacDonald said. "But I was reading that in Germany and Adolf Hitler times, everybody was making fun of Hitler. Every cartoon was against Hitler, there were comedy troupes doing sketches about Hitler being an idiot with a stupid mustache and what a stupid little idiot he was. So anyway, there goes that theory about the power of comedy. It doesn't work at all."

After that chat, I checked out Macdonald's bedside reading. Dead Funny: Telling Jokes in Hitler's Germany, by Rudolph Herzog, the 41-year-old son of German filmmaker Werner Herzog, offers a riveting retelling of the Nazis' rise to power, framed entirely by the bar-room jokes and political satire of the time.

"Political jokes were not a form of resistance," Herzog writes. "They were a release valve for pent-up popular anger. People told jokes in their neighborhood bars or on the street because they coveted a moment of liberation in which they could let off a bit of steam." In the early days, Nazi officials did not discourage such displays of humor. On the contrary, they found it to be "in [their] interests … no matter how humorlessly they may have portrayed themselves in the public sphere. …Those people who let off a bit of steam with a few jokes didn't take to the streets or otherwise challenge the Nazi leadership."

The jokes were largely "uncritical of the system, playing on the human weaknesses of Nazi leaders rather than on the crimes they were committing." If the jokes did express some kind of dissatisfaction with their political platforms, they also tended to convey "the message that there was nothing anyone could do about it."

Does Trump himself have one of these? Because on the other side he, of course, has his tiny Trump Stump.

"Harth and her longtime boyfriend were in meetings with Trump to forge a business partnership. “He was relentless,” Harth recalled in an interview, describing how on Dec. 12, 1992, he took the couple to dinner and a club — and then situated himself beside Harth and ran his hands up her skirt, to her crotch. "

Since a 2005 tape of "Access Hollywood" footage showing Donald Trump bragging about groping women leaked on Friday, rumors have swirled about more damaging recordings from "The Apprentice," the Republican nominee's reality show.

Now the show's producer is denying reports that he's keeping tapes under wraps to protect Trump.

The Apprentice producer Mark Burnett said in a new statement that he "does not have the ability nor the right" to release more possible Donald Trump tapes following the Republican presidential candidate's recent scandal.

Last week, the Associated Press released its interviews with more than 20 former crew members, editors and contestants from the NBC reality show, many of whom described the real estate mogul's behind-the-scenes behavior as inappropriate, especially towards women.

"We were in the boardroom one time, figuring out who to blame for the task, and [Trump] just stopped in the middle and pointed to someone and said, 'You'd f--k her, wouldn't you? I'd f--k her. C'mon, wouldn't you?" an unidentified crew member told the news outlet during its investigation. "Everyone [was] trying to make him stop talking, and the woman [was] shrinking in her seat."

Bill Pruitt, who previously worked on “The Apprentice,” tweeted that there is “far worse” when it comes to the Trump tapes. In addition to numerous comments regarding women, television producer Chris Nee claimed on Twitter that she had heard from staff that there’s footage of Trump using the n-word.

Those at “The Apprentice” have been intensely guarded about both the transcripts and the unaired footage. Burnett was reported by BuzzFeed to be a Trump supporter who has threatened to sue employees who leak material in violation of their nondisclosure agreements.

foxnews is hilarious today, stuffing every file story they have into the holes left by not covering this and doing a tour-de-france of backpedaling.

definitely the best channel to watch the debate coverage tonight

but alas, in the long run
