I don't know how people manage to fuck up external hard drives, unless it is something cause by an internal malfunction that had nothing to do with external forces. I keep mine sitting away from where people go, at the back of the desk against the wall, and away from the computer. I have never had any problems with it besides it occasionally not being recognized by the computer, but all I have to do it restart if that happens.
