I want a gun for home protection, not to john wayne around town. What type of gun should I get? I've only shot small guns, I think I'd stick to one of those.

I'd also like to know why some of you have so many guns, what's the purpose of that? Should I really own more than one?

if it were me, strickly for home protection, id got with either a 20 gauge or a .410 shotgun. you dont need more than one, unless you want more than one.

i have guns because i like guns and i used to hunt. i also collect world war 2 era guns.

Shotgun. Seriously.

My boss just got a 45 nighthawk for home protection. Completely unnecessary.

I agree with Jess nothing more scary then a shotgun in your face. also, accuracy is not a concern.

pistols are ok if you practice a bunch and feel confident that you can hit someone coming at you.
shotguns all you have to do is be aiming in their vicinity.

there is no round on earth when used in a practical application better at stopping a human being in it's tracks than 12 gauge 00 (double-ought) buck shot

it is, however, kind of a beast to shoot if you're not used to it. home defense shotguns are relatively cheap and are among the most reliable weapons ever made. its hard to go against one when talking about strictly home defense use.

all guns are unnecessary assuming everyone else believes all guns are unnecessary. this debate will go nowhere, and was not the intention of the thread.

everything has a different application for which it's best suited. your concealed carry pistol is most likely not the best for target practice, your hunting rifle isn't the best for home defense, and you can't carry a shotgun around town unless you're in some third world scum pit

its a lot like having more than one tool in your tool box because a spanner wrench won't fix everything
