India Witnesses 336% Increase in Child Rape Cases

A new report by Asian center for Human Rights has revealed that child rape cases in India have witnessed a 336% rise since 2001 and a large number of them are being committed in the juvenile justice homes run by the government.

The report comes months after a fatal gang-rape of a young woman in a moving bus; an incident that sparked nationwide protests and forced the government to pass tough laws against sexual assaults. The 56-page report ‘India’s Hell Holes: Child Sexual Assault in Juvenile Justice Homes’ report, while citing National Crime Records Bureau statistics, said more than 48 thousand child rapes were recorded from 2001 till 2011. Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest number of child rapes followed by Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and the capital Delhi.

According to activists sexual abuse is disturbingly common in India and government has failed to protect and treat the victims. On the other hand children vulnerabilities in India and exposure to violations of their rights remains multiple, ranging from child labor, child trafficking, commercial sexual exploitation, rape, unlawful detention, torture by police, drugs abuse, early-age marriage and other forms of violence and abuses.

Child Rights activists suggest the situation is much worse than what the reports reveal. They say the cases of child abuse largely go unreported in many states. And many of those reported usually do not result in conviction.

Gang rape of photojournalist shocks India; 2 arrested, 3 sought August 24, 2013

NEW DELHI (AP) — Police on Saturday arrested a second man in the gang rape of a young photojournalist in the Indian financial hub of Mumbai, and said they had enough evidence to prosecute those responsible for a crime that has renewed public outcry over sexual violence in the country.

The victim, a 22-year-old Indian woman, remained in a hospital Saturday and was recovering well after being repeatedly raped by five men Thursday night in a deserted textile mill, said Mumbai's police commissioner, Satyapal Singh.

She and a male colleague, who was tied up and beaten during the attack, had been on a magazine assignment as interns taking photographs of a south Mumbai neighborhood where upscale malls, trendy restaurants and luxury condominiums sit alongside sprawling slums and abandoned mills.

Police said the suspects approached the journalists on the pretense of helping them get permission to shoot inside the crumbling building.

The first suspect arrested, an unemployed 19-year-old man from south Mumbai, appeared in court Saturday and was ordered to remain in custody until Aug. 30, police said. Dozens of protesters rallied and called for justice outside the court.

A second suspect was arrested before dawn Saturday and confessed to authorities about his involvement in the incident, Singh told reporters. Members of India's elite crime unit were hunting three more suspects.

Singh said police had the evidence needed to prosecute the five suspects, including testimony given by the woman immediately after the attack while she was in the hospital receiving treatment.

The attack incensed many in India already sickened by sexual violence after the deadly gang rape of a 23-year-old student on a bus in New Delhi in December raised alarms about women's safety and revealed a culture in which rape victims are often pressed by social pressure or police into keeping silent.

New Delhi - The trial of four men suspected of the gang rape and murder of a young student last year is in its final phase. Closing arguments in the widely-publicized trial are expected to begin on Thursday, according to A.P. Singh, a lawyer for two suspects.

“A judgment is likely in the first week of September. The trial is 95% complete,” Mr. Singh said.

Four men, who have all pleaded not guilty, are accused of raping and murdering a 23-year-old physiotherapy student on a moving bus in New Delhi last year. A fifth suspect was found dead in his jail cell in March.

Police investigators allege the men assaulted the young woman with an iron rod and later dumped her and a male friend along a highway, naked and bleeding. Her injuries were so severe that she died two weeks after the attack. The woman’s male friend – who accompanied her aboard the bus – was also severely beaten, investigators say.

The assault repulsed India with its brutality and led to nationwide protests calling for better policing and harsher punishments for violent crimes against women. India’s Parliament – in response to calls for reforms — passed legislation raising punishments for rape in the most extreme cases from life imprisonment to the death penalty

4 Sentenced to Death in Rape Case That Riveted India

Published: September 13, 2013

NEW DELHI — Four men convicted of a brutal gang rape were sentenced Friday to die by hanging, a decision met with satisfaction on the part of the victim’s parents and triumphant cheers from the crowd outside the courthouse, where some held up makeshift nooses and pictures of hanging bodies.

The four men — a fruit vendor, a bus attendant, a gym handyman and an unemployed man — were found guilty on Tuesday of raping a young woman on a moving bus last December, penetrating her with a metal rod and inflicting grave internal injuries, then dumping her on the roadside.

The country was riveted by the story of the woman, who died of her injuries two weeks later, and tens of thousands of people flooded the streets to demand tougher policing and prosecution of sex crimes.

But until the last minute it was unclear whether this would lead to death sentences in a country where liberal and populist impulses have strained against one another for decades, reserving the death sentences for “the rarest of rare cases.” News of the decision was met with a wave of jubilation on the street outside.

“This is the beginning of freedom for Indian women today,” said Raman Deep Kaur, 38, a cosmetologist. “Today we are free, because these men are going to be killed.”

It is far from clear, however, that the four men will be executed in the near future — or at all. The order must be confirmed by India’s High Court, and the condemned may appeal the ruling to the High Court, Supreme Court and the president, a process that can drag on for many years.

Though there are 477 people on death row in India, only three have been executed in the last nine years.

Danish tourist gang-raped in New Delhi after asking for directions: India police

The woman also was robbed and beaten in the horrific attack, which occurred after she asked a group of men for directions to her hotel, authorities said.
January 16, 2014

NEW DELHI — A 51-year-old Danish tourist was gang-raped near a popular shopping area in New Delhi after she got lost and approached a group of men for directions back to her hotel, police said Wednesday.

The attack is the latest crime to focus attention on the scourge of sexual violence in India.

The woman also was robbed and beaten in the attack, which happened Tuesday near Connaught Place, police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said.

The woman asked the men for directions to her hotel, Bhagat said. They lured her to a secluded area where they raped her at knife-point, according to the Press Trust of India news agency.

The woman managed to reach her hotel Tuesday evening and the owner called police. Police were questioning several suspects but no arrests have been made.

This is the kind of shit that happens when you devalue women for long periods of time and then they stand up for their rights and their value as human beings. It is reactionary violence against a perceived threat to their order and their domination of culture and it is utterly disgusting that anyone would ever behave this way towards another human being under any circumstances.

It's funny, they will kill you in India for being Muslim or Christian, and or for looking at a cow the wrong way. But rape, eh all good, no jail time instead lets burn the victim!
