Is it possible to say with any reasonable degree of certainty if someone is a dumpster fire from an interview? Assume a decent resume, experience and references. My position is no.
not from one individual interview, but from a series of interviews i think you can rule out dumpster fires.
when i first got involved in the hiring process at my first job, we had a much smaller group doing the interviews—i think we had two or three one-on-one interviews per candidate—and of the three people we hired while i was there, one was a true dumpster fire, one was good, and one was decent. at my current job we do four or five partner interviews for each candidate, and we mix up the partners as much as we can. of the seven people we've hired, six of them have been great and one was good, with zero dumpster fires. it would require a pretty terrible breakdown among 8-10 people for someone bad to slip through.
