Sometimes I feel that hip hop is dead. And then I remember the underground scene. This tape is hot, and in one word, accessible. Action Bronson is a breath of fresh air in a scene that is quickly growing stagnant. I say accessible because these are lyrics that take you back to the good ol’ days, when hip hop was fun and full of wordplay, as well as subject matter we can all relate to, in one way or another, whether it's about girls or just living life. I wasn’t sure going in, but now I am convinced, this is legit hip hop.

The beats were the first thing I noticed, full of old 60’s 70’s soul and rock samples, an era of music I always enjoy, and for whatever reason attach to hip hop music. A good example of this is the tracks Steve Wynn and Thug Love Story 2012, as well as the album as a whole for that matter. I love this music and type of beats, it takes me back to my favorite eras of hip hop.

As for the lyrics, I could say they remind me of Ghostface Killa from Wu Tang Clan, as so many other people do, but that would be too easy as well as misleading. In fact, he even mentions that comparison in one of the songs. The only similarity I can draw between the two is maybe the voice and somewhat a similar style, but the subject manner is different. Bronson does have that kind of all over the place flow that is very visual and manages to tell a story. A great example is the song Dreamer.

He does manage to intertwine symbolism and punch lines in a way that is refreshing, because it seems to be lost these days. But this may be his downfall; he may never reach mainstream success for his flow, bad for him but good for us. I personally like to hear a starving artist, it sounds more authentic.
The only complaint I have with this mixtape is that it is a lot of the same. This is not too much of a big deal since it is a good offering, but my tastes are different, I like variety from an artist. But all in all, I feel that Action Bronson is a great way to introduce people to what hip hop was, and can be. It is a fun album, and as I said, accessible. It is not too over the top and remains pure to its roots. This is a tape I would use to win people over who may have misconceptions about hip hop music. I strongly urge everyone to check it out. I like the whole offering but Steve Wynn and Double Breasted are my standout picks, both for the music as well as the lyrics. Check it out on

This guy is nuts. Hippie Hooligan turned me on to him.

Yeah, I slept on him for a while now. I recently downloaded a couple mixtapes of his newer stuff, and settled on reviewing this one. Definitely on my radar from now on.
