All Else Failed - Wouldn't Wish This On Anyone

When I heard All Else Failed was putting out a new album, I got really excited. This is easily one of my favorite bands ever. I saw them for the first time as a teenager at a benefit show at Phoenixville high school (1996/1997). They came out on stage barefoot and clean cut, something at the time I wouldn't expect a band that sounds like this to look like. They absolutely destroyed the place. The sheer violence and energy of that show sold me for life.

Since then they've released quite a few albums and lost/gained a few band members, but the incredible energy and anger has remained a constant. I was sure they had broken up for good until I heard they were playing This Is Hardcore fest and later was asked to host a track from the new album (here). I immediately ordered the album.

If you're familiar with their earlier work, this is a throwback to those times. This could have easily been released in 2004, but it seems like Luke Muir, the vocalist, has gotten even more pissed since those days. This is legitimately one of the most vicious and powerful hardcore albums in years, and it does all of its damage in only 5 songs.

The album starts out with a bang - "He Is Not Long For This World". When I hosted the stream a few weeks back, I must have listened to this 100 or so times, it's that good. The lyrics are catchy, the music chaotic, and the choruses memorable. This sounds like it would have fit in really well with "A Most Bitter Season" - one of the darkest and angriest hardcore releases I've ever heard. The lines "One day the sun won't come up" and "Don't make this harder than it already is!" will be stuck in your mind for weeks.

The intensity doesn't drop off there either, each song is like getting hit in the face with a brick. They have managed to release an album that doesn't totally duplicate their older work and also goes back to their roots. The albums after Archetype tended to be a little easier on the ears, but that's not necessarily what people may have wanted. This album has a few parts with clean singing but no song is entirely clean; the parts that are just add to the overall feeling of soul crushing despondency that this will leave you with.

The best portrayal of the feel of this album is around the three-minute mark of the second track "The Fine Line Between Big Plans And Tall Orders" when the music stops, and a slow drum rhythm progresses into one of the most disturbing song endings I've heard in ages. The entire album is littered with intricate and eerie guitar work, crashing starts and stops, and doesn't relinquish your sanity until it ends. I found myself wanting to throw random things out of my window and catch things on fire while listening to it.

The last song closes out the album like an album should end. It tapers off slightly, and gives it some sort of resolution. The last song starts furiously then fades out at the end with the lines "I can't keep holding on, I can't keep looking back. But things seemed so much easier when this was all we had". The sincerity is something that has stuck with me for all these years, it's something hard to find in a band.

I would say this has no weak spots or weak songs. Having only five songs makes that more possible, but I feel like even if it had ten songs it would still be the best album of 2011. If you have ever liked this band, you need to buy this ASAP. If you have never heard this band, get on that. I hope they start playing shows again, because I know that I for one would love to see Luke choke a few more people with the mic chord.

Got the chance to listen to it for the first time since I picked it up. Incredible from start to finish. The end of Route 3 rips your heart out.
