Antikythera are a pretty brutal and technical metal band straight out of Philadelphia. I was told that it was made up of members from Her Virgin Womb, who I had heard of but had never listened to. Being an incorrigible nerd I decided to start with HVW and then make my way to the new band.

From the few tracks I was able to scrounge up on Youtube, I gathered Her Virgin Womb as a very lo-fi but competent gore-grind band. Nothing out of this world, but very, very well played. The real treat was then switching over to Antikythera.

Antikythera, as nerds like me who follow "weird shit" will recognize, is an island in Greece where shipwreck excavators dug up a mysterious gear to an ancient version of a computer that supposedly tracks the stars. The band immediately scored geek points with me on that one.

The music is multiple steps above their previous incarnation. The band is incredibly tight, even playing frantic, complex material like the first half of "Element Nexus". I had to listen to each song multiple times just to hear the drumwork. Some of it is pretty complicated, and nary a second goes by without some kind of offbeat flare or fill to really keep things interesting.

I also really liked the production on this. Antikythera seem to actually care about making each instrument stand out rather than just cranking up the mids and burying the bass. I hope to hear more from these guys in the future, 3 songs isn't cutting it for now.
