Bayside - Killing Time

When it comes to bands, there are very few I have kept up with for more than just a few years or so. Bayside however, is an exception. Coming into this record it's hard to believe I've been listening to them for a few years shy of a decade.

When their album Shudder was released, many fans were slightly put off because the sound was too happy for a band like Bayside who is known for their melodramatic and depressing, yet amazing sound. Almost 3 years later, the band will release Killing Time. This marks their 6th studio album, not including their splits with Name Taken and I Am The Avalanche. This is also their first album after departing from Victory Records, and I can honestly say that this is probably their best album to date

The album opens up with the track “Already Gone” and the listener can tell right from the bat that the old Bayside that fans know and love are back. The guitar riffs are incredibly catchy, the drums are in perfect harmony with the bass, and Anthony Raneri is as much of a lyrical genius as he was when the band first formed in 2000.

The album chugs along at a fairly consistent pace, with each song building up into only bigger and better things for the next song. The exception to this flow is track 8, “On Love, On Life” which I'm fairly sure was written about Raneri's recent divorce: "So I sit here writing words in our old place, they all come out as letters. And I contemplate mistakes that we all make".

This is, without a doubt, the album that die-hard Bayside fans have been looking for after Shudder. And the band definitely did not let anybody down in the process of writing and recording. With each listen, I keep finding more things that get me hooked back in, and will probably remain that way for the next few years. I have a feeling that, despite this year being so early, this will be one of the top albums of 2011.

I only recently downloaded their first record, I find it pretty boring.
