Castevet - The Echo & The Light

Chicago’s Castevet burst onto the scene in 2008 with the three-song demo “I Know What a Lion Is”, and followed it up last year with their excellent full-length debut record “Summer Fences”. The album received substantial recognition for taking a number of diverse 90’s emo and indie influences and creating their own distinct and fully realized sound. The band has since evolved to release their second record, “The Echo & The Light”.

Since hearing Summer Fences last spring Castevet quickly became one of my favorite new bands, combining the raw aggression of Small Brown Bike, intricate and pretty guitar melodies of American Football, shouted raspy vocals, and seamlessly intertwining post-rock elements throughout the record. To mold these varying musical influences into a cohesive sound is pretty ambitious, but Castevet managed to pull it off almost flawlessly. The record has become a mainstay in my car ever since.

On The Echo & The Light, it finds the band moving away from the post-rock influences and meandering interludes, with shorter and more refined song structures. Where the vocals weren’t necessarily at the forefront of Summer Fences, they are significantly more prominent on The Echo & The Light. Their songs have become tighter and more composed, with only one song topping the five-minute mark. While I enjoyed the post-rock and instrumental interludes on the first record, refining their sound isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The catchy ‘math’ sections, twinkly guitars, post-hardcore sound, and memorable 90’s emo influenced riffs are all still here. The band has grown and sharpened their sound on this record without losing any steam. The best elements from Summer Fences remain a part of Castevet’s sound, with a few new surprises on this record.

The album kicks off with ‘Six Parts Summer’, both catchy and memorable, it’s one of the highlights of the record. The second track, ‘Narrow Hallways’ might just be the best song Castevet has written to date. It’s raw and emotional with perfectly composed melodies and an anthemic feel to it. The last minute of this song gave me goosebumps the first few times I heard it. The fourth track, ‘Lautrec’, is the biggest surprise on the album. It’s an aggressive emo song (or referred to as ‘screamo’, depends who you ask), laden with distorted guitars, screamed vocals, and a heavy late 90’s Ebullition/Level-Plane feel to it. While differing in tone from the other tracks, it also brings a new dynamic to the record. The album closer, ‘Cities & Memory’, swells with a memorable crescendo and is capped off with a fitting post-rock influenced guitar harmony.

The production on this album, while clean and crisp, is not too polished and fits the band’s sound perfectly, adequately capturing the high and lows with the vocals mixed flawlessly. The lyrics are honest and well written, not coming off as contrived at all. This is refreshing because a lot of bands these days try to write lyrics filled with metaphors and hidden meanings, but it often comes off sounding like contrived and meaningless bullshit.

Can you tell that I like this band yet? For good reason. Castevet is one of the few bands around right now that gets me truly excited about music. The Echo & The Light is already on my short-list for best albums of the year. Don’t sleep on this band. Get into it.
