Cosmonauts Day are a post rock and metal intsrumental band from Russia. Paths Of The Restless is their debut CD, their first release being live demos. Out of the package of CDs I recieved a few days ago, this one's cover absolutely garnered my attention the fastest. A man with what looks like a never-ending headdress of some sort is wielding a curved knife, holding the head of some beast-like creature, standing in front of bleak weather and some flowers. No matter what music this band played, I was looking forward to checking this CD out.
Cosmonauts Day employ a range of sound to their music. Predominantly staying in the comfort zone of post-rock, there are moments of full-on metal which help change the dynamic drastically. Songs like "Satellite" and "The Last Watchman" stay in this post-rock state of mind for their duration, while tracks such as "The Art of Being Nothing" and "Rift" show both sides of the spectrum. I'm a fan of the shorter tracks, so luckily for me only 3 songs are 7 minutes or above. Not saying that these songs are bad in any way, I just feel the shorter songs are able to have more memorable moments and can stand on their own. The longer songs have their moments, but I feel like some of the excess could've been trimmed off to make this an incredible debut.
The quality of the recording is very good. It's loud, ambient, the guitars and bass' tone is on point, and the drums sound fantastic. At some points listening through, there are extra noises, making it feel like you are receiving signals from outer space. The whole feel of the album is atmospheric and spacey, while still demanding your attention with abrasive metal hooks and riffs. Definitely an album to check out if you like instrumental stuff, or are a fan of great musicianship and having an experience in your music in general.
