It's all there: insanely complex drumming, over the top vocal performances, shredding guitars, clanky slapped bass and the complex arrangements. But what's not there is the Cryptopsy we've all grew upon and enjoyed before.
This is a Cryptopsy more concerned with experimenting with overused trends in an extremely stagnant metal scene today rather than doing what they do best and writing another killer album of technical death/grind metal.
The album plays out like an extreme mall metal record: generic breakdowns, "atmospheric" keyboards, awful cleanly sang vocals, and harsh verses with overly technical drumming. It honestly sounds like a mix of Dillinger Escape Plan, Bleeding Through, Mike Patton's out of key brother, and some lame mosh bands with little hints of older Cryptopsy thrown in not even for good measure.
All the elements of older Cryptopsy are dwarfed by the over abundance of crap that they've thrown into the songs. I get the point of trying new and exciting things with your formula, but when you stray far from the path, you end up fucking lost. It's also not going to help that Cryptopsy have completely disregarded their older fan base in favor of an extremely less devoted one that could move on to the next trend and leave them at the drop of a hat.
Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
