Eminem - Recovery

Since its release, Recovery has received enormous amounts of praise and enormous amounts of shit talked on it via the interwebs reviews and message boards chatter. I'm not going to give you a background on Eminem and tell you why he and this album specifically are important to hip hop and his career. Nor am I going to compare Recovery to Relapse. Lets face it, in the year 2010 everyone and their grandma knows who Eminem is and already has an opinion on him. And yes, his last few releases had me less than stoked and questioning if maybe it might be time for him to throw in the towel. This album is the proverbial "fuck you" to me and to anyone else who had any doubts about Em's relevance and abilities.

It seems like Em really took his time with crafting his rhymes this time out. If you just casually listen to the songs and don't really pay attention to his rhyme scheme and what he is saying, then you are missing out on a huge part of what makes this album great. Recovery contains very few "bangers" and while the singles that have been released "Not Afraid" and "Won't Back Down ft. Pink" are good tracks, they aren't necessarily representative of the rest of the album. It also seems Eminem may have taken some of the criticism and used it constructively. One thing (ok there were A LOT of things) that were missing from Em's last few outings were his metaphors, and true hip hop heads let him know. On "No Love" Lil Wayne returns the favor from last years "Drop the World." It is a stand out track and probably has the best chance of any of the album to get major airplay. Another of my favorites samples the classic Ozzy track of the same name "Going through Changes." Its almost pointless to type up the quoteables because you just have to hear them, how they are written and how he spits them or else I won't be doing them any justice. Another thing that really makes this album enjoyable for me to listen to is that Recovery has a lot more producers than his previous efforts. Dre is still the main beatsmith and producer obviously, but its nice to hear Em spit over a Just Blaze or a DJ Khalid beat for a change. Even Havok contributed a beat. The production by up-and-coming-and-about-to-blow-the-fuck-up Boi-1da is also killer and a perfect fit for Em version 2k10.

Basically it seems like Eminem cut the shit. He lost the accent and gimmicks and got back to rhyming and spitting hard complex rhyme schemes with insane original metaphors that made him famous to begin with. That is not to say the album doesn't have a few stinkers. Why Em chose to leave "Cinderella Man" on the album and cut the track featuring Slaughterhouse, I have no idea, but you can cop that track as well as a few others as an iTunes bonus track. While I wouldn't exactly put this up there with the Infinate, Bad Meets Evil, the Slim Shady LP or the Marshal Mathers LP, Recovery is a giant leap in the right direction. I, for one, am stoked to see Em back in the spot light and I'm sure not everyone will agree on my sentiments about this album, but hey, haters gon' hate.

this album is like Death magnetic

it sucks, but people say it's good out of sympathy

there's 2 good tracks on the whole thing

he should just hang it up

I mean, if you're having fucking Pink sing your hook, and you were railing against teen pop during your better days
what the fuck??

I love this album. So glad he did away with the accents and "funny" songs.

I've heard everything from this album being amazing, to it sucks more than anything in the world. No middle ground. I guess I will have to listen and decide for myself. You guys seem to think it's descent, which means I should probably at least give it a listen.

I just listened to the opening track. Horrible! This is on the level of ICP. Hymen I think you were right about "Not Afraid" being the best track on the album. That song wasn't bad, but I can't say it was good. Nothing sticks in my mind. That is the difference between artist like Gucci and Em. Em is an amazing lyrist however, I think he has lost his ability to make you remember him and his words.

Yeah I was listening to it in the car today and I found myself skipping over those tracks except the track he does with Lil Wayne. I think that's what is keeping me from really enjoying this whole album.
