Hank Williams III - Rebel Within

Captain Ahab   (12 reviews)

On his last record with, his current musical nemesis, Curb Records Hank III brings forth a slow dragging through a swamp filled with depression, drug & alcohol abuse, and personal loss. The man who carries the flag for REAL country music today delivers another stellar album to the masses. This, like his other albums, is for people who are tired of "country songs" about the beach and loving their tractors from guys with highlights in their hair and clothing contract with Abercrombie.

The album starts of with a creole touch on the first track called Gettin' Drunk and Fallin' Down which is relatively upbeat compared to the rest of the album. While you won't find a multitude of diverse topics on this, the subject at hand is well delivered. The highlight of the album, by far, is #5 (track 7) which speaks of personal and friends addictions. The pace and subject of this song make you want to cry while your looking for a strong rope to hang yourself with. The Moonshiner's Life is a tip of the hat to legendary shiner Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton and his outlaw cohorts making heat in a bottle in the hills of appalachia.

Truthfully there isn't a hole in the quality of this album and if you're a III fan you will dig this for sure.
If I was to compare this to his previous releases I'd have to say Lovesick, Broke, and Driftin' is closest. Pick it up and enjoy the way country music should be created, with feeling, heartache, and the urge to rebel against your everyday shitty life.

(p.s. No Joe Buck on this album)

most of this one is in his lower voice which is super depressing, in an excellent way.
