His Name Was Yesterday - His Name Was Yesterday

Buffalo, New York’s His Name Was Yesterday might be one of metalcore’s last stabs at a shitty As I Lay Dying knock-off band. I can’t find one good thing about their self-titled record – it’s all completely generic and formulaic, from the stupid, nonsensical band name, to the pseudo-Gothenburg single-note chug riffs to the boring, uninspired breakdowns, to the forced, machine-like screaming vocals, to the terrible clean vocals, to the subpar musicianship, to the laughable lyrics. I honestly thought this kind of music died out a few years back with the inception of the equally, if not more, awful deathcore genre, but I guess I was wrong. Why do bands keep pumping out this garbage? There’s nothing new to write. It’s all been done, and none of it was ever good. This record is a grim testament to that.

The record opens up with a song called “Where it Ends,” which starts with a quasi-solo that sounds like it was literally written in five minutes. It doesn’t harmonize with the rest of the music, which is, super surprisingly, some standard chug-riffing. It just kind of lays on top of it awkwardly and even sounds as if it’s of a different production quality. Cue the passionless screaming.. about thirty seconds later some clean singing.. a minute after that a boring breakdown that I don’t even think a fifteen year old would mosh to.. at this juncture I’m starting to wonder what the point is to this song. There’s no purpose to going through the rest of the songs because they’re all exactly the same, minus some basic nuances like the pitiful attempt to sound like Pantera or something on the track “Killshed,” or the all-purpose clean part at the end of “It Always Ends in Fire,” that I guess is supposed to sound epic. Also, what's up with every band like this feeling the need to end their record with a stupid acoustic ballad? I listened to this whole record and actually fell asleep halfway through. I’m not kidding.

This band seriously needs to give it up. Their myspace page states, “With several years and numerous projects under their belts, the collective members of His Name Was Yesterday are fueled by the realization that this may be their last shot to make the music they love so much.” That’s pretty embarrassing, because their supposed last shot at music is just another ripple in a ridiculously oversaturated pond.

Also, their cover art is a direct rip-off of Senses Fail’s “Let it Enfold You”. Take a look for yourself. What the fuck were they thinking?

They sound like what happens when "older" dudes find metalcore, but can't let go of nu metal and mainstream hard rock. Awfully generic music and awful band name.

Why do I NOT agree with this review. Probably because this is the most Far fetched review I have ever read in my life. It obvious that the reviewer had an ear full of HIS preferred music while listening to the Cd. Open your ears a bit an take a real listen. Do you actually think that if this CD was as bad as you say that STEMM would allow it to be release by their own label??? How about the hundreds of HNWY fans that love and enjoy their music and go to the shows.....Do you think they just go for the Drinks?? I think many other people will disagree with your review....but hey nice try right!

"Older dudes" are you referring to Metallica or Ozzy? Last I knew older dudes meant 50+ years of age. I just read an article where the gentleman from Senses Fail was honored to have inspired the work. He was flattered. It was an article about artist copying others artworks. Millions of bands, painters, sculptors, etc. have done the same. I personally find the CD to be much better than the mainstream bands that you hear on the radio these days. The style seems to be in the middle of mainstream and underground, which fits my tastes to a tee. Everyone has their own opinion that they are entitled to. I personally enjoyed the CD.

did you really just defend "artists" copying other artists' work? there's a fine, fine line between parody/homage and a straight rip off.

I wasn't ragging on your review, did I say something to offend you? I may have misworded "copying" what's a good word for inspiring? Only assholes get offended by someone flattering them. If Senses Fail likes it....no one else should have a problem with it. Radio Killer was the one ragging on your review, Sir. I did not say you were wrong, actually you worded things very nicely and educated unlike some people who can't string a sentance together. Also, me saying everyones entitled to their opinion means just that, I respect your opinion. I'm not hating on you and your opinions. I was hating on the "older dudes" comment left on top because obviously they guys in the band aren't that old.

I'm willing to bet that twilitekiller is the same person as radiokiller.

Even if I am wrong in that assumption, I am positive that both posters are in the band.
