Jack Johnson - To The Sea

It’s worth noting that I really, really, really, really like acoustic/folk/rock music. The whole singer/songwriter thing is, pardon my French, my shit. More often than not, this genre of music is inhabited by someone with some poignant songs and something important to say. The lyrics can easily make up for an album that’s lacking in the actual music portion of a singer/songwriter album. In Jack Johnson’s case, the shoe is on the other foot.

The music on To the Sea is well produced and sounds very crisp. The drums accent the music very nicely, (see “The Upsetter” for an example) and the guitar and piano tracks fit together like a (somewhat generic) puzzle.

That’s about where the positives of this album end. Johnson’s voice, a “cool” croon, is getting a little old at this point. It doesn’t take you very long to realize that you’re listening to the same rehashed songs and harmonies over and over. Johnson’s voice isn’t the only sticking point for me though. His lyrics are almost offensively inoffensive, extremely unimaginative, and at times grating. Marvel at the literary genius of Johnson on, “Pictures of People Taking Pictures.”

“Pictures of people taking
Pictures of people taking
Pictures of people taking pictures.
I pictured us at the end of time
Taking pictures of nothing.”

I think that pretty much says it all as far as the lyrics go. My main complaint about Johnson is that he seems to sit down and make a conscious decision to create background music. Sure, you’ll sell a lot of copies that way, but at the end of the day is the “artist” in you really being satisfied in any way? What’s the point of being a musician unless you have something interesting to say? Oh yeah, to cash in. I can’t blame Johnson; until people stop listening to his inoffensive little ditties, he’s going to keep milking it for all it’s worth.
