Johnny Cash - American VI: Ain't No Grave

Honestly if you've never heard Johnny Cash you should just go ahead and kill your self. That said, Ain't No Grave are Johnny Cash's final recordings. Recorded in the last few months before his death due to complications from diabetes.

Cash's health was failing and its obvious on the recordings. His voice sometimes wavers here and there. The overall feeling of the album is somber and dark. Even the art work is plain black and white. It's not crammed with a million instruments or guest spots. It really lets his voice be the main instrument and do what he did best. The album features the last song he wrote called "I Corinthians 15:55." Many of the songs pertain to heaven, death and redemption.
It seems like he knew he didn't have that long and producer Rick Rubin would have a band on stand by for when Cash was feeling healthy enough to record.

I really don't think I can do justice in this review to how goddamn good this album is. All of the songs are
amazingly solid. My favorite is track 10 the famous Hawaiian song Aloha Oe. The guitar work is just phenomenal, plus I love anything with slide guitar. Also Ain't No Grave has a great use of this stomping chain sound. I shouldn't have to convince anyone to get this album.

Mr. Cash, I raise my glass to you.
