Needless to say I was very pleased when this review was assigned to me. Killing Joke are back for their fourteenth studio release featuring the 4 original members Jaz,Kevin,Martin, and Paul. In October 2007,The band was devastated with the loss of former bandmate/friend Paul Raven. It was then they decided to work together as a unit for the first time since 1982. I thought the lapse in time would be a great test for the band and the overall finished product.

When the band was rehearsing for gigs during the summer 2009 they were also writing new songs for Absolute Dissent during the rehearsals. They had 9 songs ready for the album and decided to add another 9 songs. They then had to decide which songs, mixes, and artwork would be used. After listening to this multiple times already, I don't think they could have done it any better.

There is very good cause for the amount of influence this group has had on other bands for the last 20 years. Between the punk, post punk, and industrial sounds you get from them it seems impossible to stay away.I believe this studio release steps away from any other album they have done musically and sets the tone early.

The six minute title track is probably my favorite because I feel it shows you exactly where the cd is going and how the sound textures will change from song to song. The reverb on the vocals from clean to gritty seem prefect in the mix. Guitar melodies and leadwork have a sonic british sound with excellent detail in the effects department. Overall I couldn't find one thing I did not like while I listened to this album. Some stand out tracks if I had to choose were Absolute Dissent,Fresh Fever From The Skies,End Game,In Excelsis, and The Raven King.

These guys did an exceptional job on this record and it shows in the music. After really giving this the listens I did, I have a much greater respect for these four musicians then I ever had before.

A little while back they canceled some shows to finish the album, if I remember correctly. I think it was Jaz who released a statement about the pure genius of the new record or something similarly immodest. However I am still looking forward to hearing it.
