Plebeian Grandstand - How Hate Is Hard To Define

The introduction of this album broods and broods with thick feedback. I love intros like that, because you know it's just a matter of time before the shit hits the fan. When Ordo Ab Chao' kicks in, it's truly massive. It's like a giant stone wall falling on you. In one piece. This theme continues as thick, slab-like riffs and thundering drums and bass plow through you like a runaway tank on the freeway.

There's a lot of noise on this album, and a shit-ton of screaming. A surface listen to this will not really give you the whole impression. There are subtle and warped melodies that run through the noisy leads and distorted bass. The drums are reminiscent of Dave Grohl's beastly sound on Nirvana's In Utero album. This is utterly unfriendly to your ears on first listen but on subsequent spins, the beauty starts to seep through amidst the chaos.

I suggest listening to this with a clear head. Don't listen to it when you're tired or preoccupied, because then it becomes headache music. My sole complaint is the lack of real hooks. Songs tend to blur into each other, but I think that's typical of this genre, and if you're into mathy tech-grind that heavily references late 90's Massachussets metalcore and a hint of black metal in some spots, then this is right up your alley. Best song IMO is Easy to Hate/Hard to Define. It lays back a little on the math and gets real atmospheric, although still very loud. They do know how to bring it down a little bit with some ambient guitar passages, but those tend to be very quick, chucked overboard for more chaos.

Solid record. Powerful, heavy, dark, and to the point. Not particularly the style of music I enjoy listening to most, but I can't deny that this is very well written and executed.
