Poison the Well - Versions

I was shocked to see this album hadn't been reviewed yet, as all PTW releases at least deserve to be reviewed here because of their longevity in the hardcore scene, even if they are the shittiest, blandest and most painfully boring release to-date.

If that didn't tip you off, I'll just say it. This album fucking blows.

And no, I'm not an "Opposite of December is the only real PTW!" fans. I have enjoyed every single PTW release until this one. Distance Makes the Heart Grow Fonder, Opposite of December, Tear from the Red, You Come Before You, all great in their own way. Many will disagree with me, but this is just a conditioner.

Because Versions is just total crap. I never understood the term "noisecore" because it's the gayest genre name ever, but this album truly defines it. It is complete shit. Jeffrey has almost entirely abandoned any attempt at singing interesting melodies, which is unfortunate because YCBY was promising in that department. The songs all sound the same, although I can't tell if it's because of the painfully sub-par songwriting or the absolutely fucking horrifying production qualities...but in the end it doesn't matter. Every song sounds like mush with some typical PTW shouting, muddy and droning "melodic" vocals and sloppy musicianship that feels like ten steps backward from YCBY.

I can't begin to describe how disappointed I am with this release. This coming from a band that has almost engraved themselves into my musical history with their relatively long list of unique and successful releases, always staying true to PTW but always finding a new direction for their sound, beginning with the simplistic yet brash sound of Distance... all the way through the technically advanced frantic sound of "Crystal Lake," the final track on YCBY. The band's track record has shown a tremendous ability to adapt to changing band rosters, changing styles and changing influences, always finding a way to put out cohesive and melodic hardcore with a huge sound and a phenomenal punishing heaviness.

But this release is a stark abandonment of all things PTW. They took one sonic element from their war chest and made an entire album around it while abandoning every other musical tenet that got them where they are. No more unique melodic lines. No more punishing drum phrases. No more juxtaposition of jerky, riffy guitar lines mixed with droning power chords.

Now it's all bland, all drone, all noise, all mundane. All shit. Don't buy this album.

It's not that great, but it's way better than The Opposite of December.

whats funny is they went all the way to Sweden for a few months to record this at some "super awesome" studio only for it to turn out like crap.

I'm surprised this thread isn't filled with kids who are 19/20 claiming only the first two cds are the best even though they weren't around for any of it.

Opposite of December is probably one of the most jocked albums in the history of the hardcore scene. It was more important than it was good - but those times are past now and there's no point in keeping it on the mantle.

Personally I liked You Come Before You the best - it had melody, heaviness, diverse vocals, etc. which is what makes this following release so fucking terrible.

I just downloaded this for pure comic relief and they are really trying to do something different than they used to, but its just as terrible as they've always been
