When I saw this album at Hastings on sale for $9.99, I think I was blurred by

1. The low price tag,
2. Memories of seeing them live on their "Hearts Once Nourished..." tour.

Because if I had remembered how absolutely terrible "That Within Blood Ill Tempered" was, I think I would have had second thoughts about spending 20% of the Hastings gift card I got for my birthday from my brother on the follow-up album.

I just don't get these guys. Hearts... was a fucking incredible hardcore release and will forever go down in my book as one of the greatest albums ever released.

Then That Within... came out, and it sounded like a complete tearing down of all they had done, to the point where it was just a collection of frantic screaming, disarranged, discordant guitar riffs, ADHD drum phrasing and totally incoherent song structures.

This album sounds much more like That Within..., but somehow they've achieved a higher (err...lower?) level of discordant musicianship and an even more monotonous vocal style that is so flat it almost gives me a headache after a few songs. No more memorable "chorus" lines, such as "a profound hatred of man" or "my heart bleeds the darkest blood."

These songs are like a bad sit-com. Every song somehow leaves you feeling the same way when it ends from when it began. Every song starts in a similar fashion, is a similar length and never really takes you any real distance from the beginning, before coming to a completely illogical end, only for the next song to begin, forcing you to check your CD player to see where track one (or two, or three) ended and where the next track(s) began.

This album feels entirely uninspired and leaves you feeling flat and begging for something more (or different?) upon its completion. I fear these guys left their best days about ten years ago and have since been striving to reach the talent level that is now a fading, albeit fond, memory from the dusty mid-late 1990s. But who can blame them? They've had so many members and names it's hard to keep up any expectations for these guys.

My opinion? Get all twenty current and former members together, have a big Slipknot-esque reunion tour performing Hearts... songs, then have a big reunion barbecue, then go your separate ways. I already miss the Shai Hulud that once existed, so please just put me out of my misery and get it over with.

this I don't get considering they started the style. it's like saying you don't like NWA and they're no good at gangsta rap.

Seriously. "A Profound Hatred of Man" and "Hearts Once Nourished.." are fucking great albums.

I like it, but it's twice as overproduced as TWBIT was and redoing "set your body ablaze" was uncalled for.

Ummm... Matt Fox is a genius period. He does not have any bad songs in his body of work. The new album sounds great, and to say that Matt fox can change the line up of Shai Hulud and and not be relevant is like saying The Mars Volta or DIllinger Escape Plan can't replace their drummers with better ones... lol. This review is silly.

7/10 and they are by far my favorite band. Vocals were too monotone and I don't think the creativity in the songs could compare to That Within. The good songs are great and the boring songs are forgettable.
