The Real McKenzies are a Scottish/Celtic punk band that were formed in Vancouver in 1992. Throughout their career, they have toured with many notable names, such as Flogging Molly, NOFX, Rancid, The Misfits and others. I've loved previous albums that they have put out, and Shine Not Burn, their new acoustic live album is no exception. I have taken so long to review this album because I've been trying to find at least a single flaw, and my extensive efforts have uncovered nothing. This album is perfect, plain and simple.

"It's a pleasure to sing this song because it's a song about one of my favorite things to do in my old age, and that is... getting fucked up on alcohol!" As soon as I heard that crowd interaction, I could think of so many friends and people from this site who would love this album. The songs are fantastic, true to the genre without being generic. The covers are on point and fun, with a ton of crowd involvement. "Chip" is one of my favorite songs from the album and "Droppin' Like Flies" is your token tribute song that is very well done. The fact that this album was all done live at a pub is what I feel ties it all together perfectly because that is exactly where this music should be played.

Bottom line, I'd recommend Shine Not Burn to any and everyone for two reasons. One being that I don't understand how anyone doesn't enjoy Irish punk and the second being that the live compilation is just that good. I will certainly be playing this for all of my friends and putting it on for background music at parties. Another great release for The Real McKenzies. It is definitely not one to miss.
