1124 Records has put together a 10 band tribute album to the late 80s, early 90s, straight edge hardcore band Chain of Strength. So to get this out of the way, if you don’t know who Chain is, you should probably turn in your scene point card and move on to the next trend (I pray it has something to do with the swing dance resurgence) or go out and try to find copies of everything that came out on Revelations records in the first 10 years. Now that being said, this is a pretty solid compilation that anyone who is a fan of Chain of Strength would dig.
They put together a solid line up of “the hits” performed by great bands such as Reign Supreme, Ambitions, and Mindset. There really isn’t much you can say about a tribute album…if you like the band that is being covered, than more than likely you are going to like the overall album. Most of the bands don’t deviate to far from the source material, so you can’t complain about things like interpretation and ruining a good song, etc. If I did have to find something to complain about it, I would have to say my least favorite track is Hurts To Ask as covered by Remission. Not sure why, but I think it is because the singer had this whole Fred Schneider from the B-52s thing going on. Ambitions doing There is a Difference would probably be my favorite, but more because I just love the lyrics to that jam. “I don’t blame you for giving up, I blame myself for giving in…”. The anthemic “True Til Death” is close second.
Bottom line is that if you are into any of the bands on it, or loved Chain Of Strength, this is definitely worth picking up. 1124 Records has released this as a vinyl only release (with a digital download as well) as double 7”. It also came in 3 different colors, with package options available. Not sure, but I think the first pressing of this might be sold out already, so keep your eye out for a potential second pressing.
