Serpent Throne - White Summer: Black Winter

First of all I can't say how happy I was when Wren told me that my first review was gonna be for local Philly rockers Serpent Throne. I have seen this band a couple of times in the area and was always extremely impressed.

White Summer: Black Winter immediately lets you know how strong the power of the harmony is and doesn't stop for 9 tracks of 70's guitar worship with a little hint of Metallica from time to time. Not only do the riffs get you playing air guitar within seconds but the strong song structure and all around musicianship keeps you interested throughout the whole record that many Sabbath-esque bands lack.

Tracks like "March of the Druids" with the use of the bell followed by a long set of guitar harmonies lets you know that they took time with the recording and that just because your in a stoner band doesn't mean you can't have well thought out songs. Or the drum solo on "Four Winds" showing off the all around talent in a guitar driven band.

The recording itself couldn't get much better either. Every instrument is dominantly clear but not over polished. Instead keeps a 70's fuzz tone in a fresh crisp matter. Which I'm sure is what they were going for.

In short if you enjoy guitar harmonies and tasteful guitar solos as much as I do I would go out in 2011 and buy White Summer: Black Winter and like I said in the beginning you should also see them live both will get your head rockin.

I really think this is a band that could and should be bigger than they are.
