My first encounter with the Little Rock, Arkansas doom band Pallbearer was in an issue of Decibel. After reading, I assured myself that I "got it". Southern band plays sabbath worshiping doom and takes promos in front of churches. Upon my first spin, I couldn't have been more wrong. From the acoustic intro of "Foreigner" to the synths of "Given to the Grave", so called traditional music never sounded so refreshing and new. While the lyrical theme may be rather morbid, one is left with an overall feeling of worth and accomplishment, something I was surely not expecting. Just one listen to the solo following the acoustic break in "an offering of grief" and you will know exactly what I mean. Pallbearer painted a sonic masterpiece with "sorrow and extinction". Pick it up now.
