It seems as if people love to shit on Cattle Decapitation. I can understand that they went from being an extreme grind band to focusing more on death metal. I thought the change was natural and pushed them to the forefront of death metal with how they were able to write great songs with a completely twisted slant to them.
Their new offering, Monolith of Inhumanity might be their most focused and intelligent album yet. They've managed to grow on everything that they were doing in their past three releases and bring it together into a whole with some results that will probably shock even the most bitter of listeners.
They come out of the gate blasting with their patented style of grinding discordant metal that takes you through a ton of twists and turns within each song. Travis Ryan once again proves why he's one of the best vocalists in metal. His vocal phrasing is top notch and his range is still awe inspiring. He is now employing a new shriek that's almost melodic but not singing. It fits in with the music and definitely elevates this disc to a new level.
One huge noticeable difference in this album is that they're letting the bass come through a lot more. Before there were hints of it but there are clear bass breaks that definitely add a new element to the sound. Once again, Josh Elmore shows his chops off. This guy is ridiculous with off timing and dissonant squeals. His staccato style is definitely out of this world and he needs more recognition for what he does.
All in all, this is another solid Cattle Decap release that proves again that they are not to be fucked with. The older they get - the more comfortable they are at what they do and that maturity is showing off in big ways.
