Strong Intention have been around in one form or another for a long time. Originally a pretty straight up hardcore band, these guys have shifted into a metal band without losing their roots in hardcore in recent years. As an example, they just got off their tour with Lock Up and Goatwhore, but in their earlier days fit right in with Baltimore hardcore bands Gut Instinct and Next Step Up. It was a gradual shift , but the band seem to have found their niche in playing an extreme version of fast metal/hardcore/punk.
These six quick tracks total less than ten minutes. The longest of which features guest vocals of Mike IX of Eyehategod fame. Personally I don't think he adds much, but his addition isn't detrimental at all either. After that the record picks up the speed. Each time I listen to this I change my mind as to whether I hear more of a classic ripping hardcore sound or a thrashing grindcore assault. I guess that would be a good indication that Strong Intention perfectly walks the line between both worlds and explains their easy transitions from one sound to the next.
"3rd Space Gorilla Generator" is probably my favorite track on the record and comes in right in the middle. It's the only other track over two minutes and has a traditional hardcore sound before dropping off into a slow metal breakdown before heading back to the fast shit. The final two tracks flash by in less than a minute each. Which helps solidify that I like the second half of this record slightly better than the first.
What exactly is Strong Intention playing? Who really gives a fuck? It is metal. It is hardcore. I like it, and it is good.
