I've been listening to John Moreland's Everything the Hard Way for a little over six months now. A friend of mine (who I owe a massive debt to for showing me this) knowing the type of music that I tend to gravitate towards recommended this record to me around the time of its digital release in late 2011. Since that time I have wholly wrapped my mind and heart around this collection of songs and hold it as something sacred in todays musical landscape, solely because I believe and relate to every gravely word bellowed from Moreland's lungs. Anyone who has expierenced self-doubt, a broken heart, indifference or hope should be able to find an emotional anchoring point here. It is this relateability that Moreland conjurs with his words and music that makes this a truly special performance.
The foundation of this record is within the realm of stripped down americana rock and roll with leanings of folk and alt-country. Think American heartland rock contemporaries Springsteen and Melloncamp, with a more modernized flair like that of Lucero or even Gaslight Anthem.
I firmly believe that the world needs a rock band like this. That with a guitar, a bass, a few drums, a soulfully honest voice... and nothing else. No frills, no filler and no gloss. Just songs drawing inspiration from raw emotion and being wrecklessly honest. So few truly lay their hearts on the line like this and I applaud Moreland for his bravery.
The bottom line is that after reading this review, I'm sure you already know whether or not this is even your cup of tea. If this sounds like something you would enjoy, you will be rewarded with 10 emotionally powerful songs that are as painful as they are beautiful. This is real rock and roll.

Fans of Lucero and Gaslight Anthem (I know there are some of you on this board)... give this a spin. For real.
