Another Mistake / Overlooked - Split

When I was younger, one of my favorite types of release was the split 7". Typically I would buy them because one of the bands would familiar to me and I greatly craved finding new bands of similar styles to ones I already enjoyed. They were an invaluable tool for spreading the world about not only two bands simultaneously, but using the established fan base of one or both of the bands for publicity for the other. To see this approach to promotion finding a resurgence in the last 10 or so years lights a fire of hope in me. The ease of self-distribution now via the internet has made releases like this an endangered species, but it is good to see bands like Another Mistake and Overlooked keeping tradition alive.

Now, on to the record itself. Another Mistake is a very raw and fast hardcore band from the midwest. They blast through their side of the record with a sound very reminiscent of early American Nightmare and Over My Dead Body. North Carolina's Overlooked really kick the door down with their songs on the second half. If you are unfamiliar, I liken them to the bands blazing a trail out of the late 90's/early 2000's Boston scene like Right Brigade and Think I Care. Very fast, very aggressive... and very pissed off.

The bottom line is that neither band is breaking new ground with their sound, but they don't need to. Hardcore has never been about pushing the envelope, however it is about having a release. These bands collectively explode through 6 total songs in less than 9 minutes... and that is all they need to get their point across. If you like your hardcore fast and angry, look no further.
