When I first heard of Primate's existence I was immediately was interested. I also was a little hesitant. It's a supergroup. These things either work out really well or are just kinda there and boring. Putting together members of Mastodon, Brutal Truth, and The Despised should be a recipe for pure awesome right? Pretty much!

I, like many others, had absolutely no clue the band self released an EP last year which was limited to a thousand copies. Rather cool considering a band like this just has to say they're a band and hundreds of labels would come swarming. It's not cool for the masses that coudn't get said EP. Thankfully, they signed with Relapse. What we have here is the EP and some new tracks added on.

The band sounds exactly like you would expect if you mixed all of the member's bands together. A more dirty punk grindcore sound with Mastodon touches. That's really the best way to describe it. These tracks fly by QUICKLY and do so with a fury. An amalgamation of punk, hardcore, grind, and metal, this is pure energy. It at times reminds me of classic D-beat hardcore, Napalm Death, Tragedy/HHIG, and early Mastodon (especially in the leads).

Draw Back a Stump is an excellent debut and lives up to the hype of a supergroup. It's also the best thing Kevin Sharp has done in YEARS (yes, better than recent Brutal Truth, take that how you will). The only thing I wish of it is we had more. The style of music is supposed to be short and to the point, but when this is over I was left thinking why is this all we have? More damn it! However, that's a good thing to keep fans wanting more. Hopefully this isn't a band that is a once and done deal because they're onto something good.

i think it's awesome but i also think that the last venomous concept album is the best thing that sharp has been involved in for a long time.

hahahahahaha
i would think they would draw some attention to a genre that been rather stagnant in the past few years (imo) and in turn get some other bands more cash and breath some life into it.

im not arguing. just stating what i have heard.

but to say grind has been stagnant in the past few years makes no sense to me. i feel its been more popular and unique than it ever has before.
